INSPIRED BY: GIRLY LIVING ROOM
Don't y'all just love this room? A light-filled space with the bright colors and clean lines - it's right up my alley! It's super girly, sure, but honestly, when else are you going to be able to decorate a room in corals and pinks and oranges and turquoises than when you're a twenty-something girl living by yourself? (Or with a roommate, natch.) Love the bright colors and the graphic prints and how all the white keeps it from being too overwhelming. If I could redo my room, this color scheme would def be a top contender.

FELIZ CUMPLEANOS GAUDI
Have y'all seen the Google Doodle today? It's a S/O to my man, Gaudi. If you don't know, Gaudi is a famous Catalan architect (Catalonia is a region in Spain, most notably where Barcelona is). So if you ever go to Barcelona, you learn all about him. If you ever study abroad in Barcelona for 3 months, you learn all about him and see all his sights. And if you study abroad for 3 months in Barcelona and take a class on Barcelona architecture, you literally can't go five minutes without hearing about Gaudi.
He does have some pretty cool stuff, though. Sagrada Familia is the most famous - the gigantic church/UNESCO World Heritage site that was started in the 1920's and has an estimated completion date of 2026 (you can see some scaffolding in the above pic). There's also the trippy Park Guell, with beautiful views of the city, and his two more famous apartment buildings, where people used to live with his twisted sculptures and wavy lines, Casa Mila and Casa Batllo.
So on what would have been his 161th birthday - if he hadn't gotten run over by a tram (no joke!!) - feliz cumpleanos Gaudi!

HAPPY CHIC
You guys. I want EVERYTHING.
My bedding at school is yellow and gray, so I think some of those yellow/gray throw pillows might have to make their way to my home. It's fate. Anyway, get ye to a J.C. Penney STAT and scoop up some of this bright happy chic goodness before it's all gone!

iOSpectacular
So unless you live under a rock or still have a cell phone that flips open, you've probably heard of Apple's announcement of a new iPhone operating system - iOS7. It does a host of stuff that is going to be really cool, including but not limited to a better weather app (FINALLY! That app is my life and it's so not easy to use), multitasking capability, and iTunes Radio!!
On top of that, however, iOS7 is really really really really ridiculously good-looking. It was designed by this dude by the name of Jony Ive, who people are hailing as an a design genius. You can read more about Ive's design and his idea of "bringing order to the complexity" all over the web, including on Apple's own page for iOS7. It definitely is simpler - flatter, without those annoying lens-flary things. The background is lame, but obviously you'd change that.
I personally like the design, but many people disagree - talking about everything from his use of such simple flat shapes to gradients. And, of course, there's already a hilarious tumblr out that capitalizes on the big news, called Jony Ives Redesigns Things. Beware: excessive gradients ahead!

JACK OF ALL TRADES
It's October, dudes, and you know what that means: HALLOWEEN! Halloween is by far one of my favorite holidays, and there's nothing better than celebrating it in college. Instead of wearing one costume and going out trick-or-treating one night, you get to go out all weekend, wearing a different costume every night! It's a dream come true!! (Though with considerably more alcohol than candy). Also, one of my favorite events of all time at my school is Trick-or-Treating on the Lawn, where all of the kiddos from around town dress up and come trick-or-treat at the rooms that line the Lawn on campus. It's literally the most adorable thing you've ever seen in your life. I usually spend the entire afternoon taking stalkerish pictures of nuggets dressed up and toddling around and playing in the leaves.
Also, I'm really excited to finally get to decorate for Halloween! (A dorm and an apartment don't really give you much in the way of that). But now that I'm in the sorority house, we've got a great front porch that is just begging for some cool pumpkins. Here are some of my favorite ideas from the interwebs.
So much spirit!!! And a creative way to show off your house number for the mailman!
These ones are painted, but you could get fancy and carve as well -
especially the silhouette of your state.
(This could easily be school pride as well - just slap the logo on there!)
In this case, all that glitters is definitely gold, my friends.
Either spray paint gold or silver, or spray paint with clear sticky stuff
and roll liberally in glitter. (Make sure you do that on some newspaper or something).
It'll be one glitzy Halloween.
Soooo trendy right now. (But actually).
Get in with the cool kids and paint your pumpkin chevron.
Hint: use masking tape for this one.
Bonus points: carving a pumpkin in a chevron pattern
(Obviously not all the way through - you just scrape it, duh).
So my love affair with monograms isn't really a secret,
but in all honestly, HOW COOL ARE THESE?
Get fancy with a stencil and a knife, or paint it in cool colors.
Nothing says this pumpkin is MINE like actually putting
your name (or initials) on it.
Are you even trendier than chevron?
Do you have a neon Cambridge Satchel and ombre hair and
are just generally way cooler than the rest of us?
Congrats, here are the pumpkins for you.
Use tape for the criss-cross and the dip-dyed.

I love the simplicity and repetition of this cover. Plus, the pop of pink from the text is a nice touch. This cover first caught my eye because I just learned about this set of photos by Eadward Muybridge in one of my classes. Guess history is useful after all!

Great book about a female journalist living in Afghanistan, facing oppression from the government while trying to help her family at the same time. The government hosts a cricket tournament, trying to create some good PR with its neighboring countries, and the winners get to go to Pakistan. Against a backdrop of cricket and the realities that many women face in Afghanistan, Murari writes a story about independence, family, freedom, and love.

MADE IN THE USA

So I'm still riding the wave of patriotism that's come from these Olympic Games. I'm such a sap when it comes to stuff like this, but the thought of everyone in the country sitting around their TVs, cheering on athletes - some of which they've never heard of before in their lives - simply because they're representing the good ol' US of A, makes me all warm and fuzzy inside. (Yes, show me those inspiring Nike, P&G, and Visa Olympic commercials and I will tear up.)
On a completely unrelated note, I also like awesome typography and Jack Daniel's. So this is like - BAM! The trifecta of awesomeness. Check out these sweet letterpress posters made by the dudes at Yee Haw Industries for Jack D. Awesome lettering, Jack Daniels, and 'Merican pride. What more could you ask for?

If you like your books action-packed, this one's for you.

BOOKMARK
Hey y'all! I'm starting another new series today called BOOKMARK. I've always loved reading, but I often find myself pulling books off the bookshelf at Barnes & Noble not necessarily for what they're about, but for what their covers look like. So I'm going to split BOOKMARK into two parts:
COVER: for a well-designed book cover that's caught my eye
and
PAGES: for a book that I've been reading or I want to read soon.
Hopefully there's some bibliophiles out there that'll enjoy this series as much as I do!

GEOMETRIC
Found this image on pinterest earlier and fell in love with this necklace - the colors, the simple lines, the repetition. It's made by Iacoli & McAllister, a Seattle-based design studio that makes really cool geometric home goods and jewelry. According to their website, they're inspired by things such as industrial processes, thunderstorms, other people's mixed cd's, bike rides, and sandblasting, so I'd say they're probably pretty cool.

MINIMALIST
As soon as I saw this image of Harper's Bazaar's newest issue, I immediately fell in love. As fun as text and pictures and design design design can be, sometimes less really is more. This is just so clean and simple that it grabs your attention and holds it. Tell me you wouldn't go straight to this magazine among the dozens on the rack that look exactly the same? And don't even get me started on Gwyneth's body...
