CUPCAKE BATTLES

Ohmygod I'm drooling. Can't decide with one of these delicious little treats I want to eat more, so I might just have to whip up both and do my own taste tast.
Seriously, y'all, I think Pinterest is bad for my health - literally. #obese

FOURTH OF JULY: WHAT TO EAT + DRINK

This time tomorrow, I'll be heading for the runway at the tiny airport near our beach house in North Carolina, ready to touch down for a weekend of family, sunshine, craziness, and of course, food.  We do a traditional cookout on the Fourth - cheeseburgers, hot dogs, baked beans, and corn on the cob.  I personally think there's nothing better after a long day on the beach.  You can keep it simple like we do, or make your All-American meal as fancy as you want (sriracha corn or bacon bourbon baked beans, anyone?) Or go the surf route instead of the turf and enjoy some good fresh lobstah. According to my personal philosophy, a meal is not complete without dessert, so finish it off with a yummy shortcake topped with the perfect American color-combo: white whipped cream and red and blue berries!

And of, course, how could I forget something to wash it all down with? Crack open one of Budweiser's American-themed bottles to be extra festive (yes, even I will drink Bud Heavy for the occasion).  Or celebrate with another summer staple - watermelon. Soak it in tequila, dip it in salt, and you've got a portable margarita! You can sip a strawberry daquiri on the beach, or sit on the front porch and watch the Forth of July parade with some Front Porch Lemonade - a yummy mix of bourbon and ginger and lemonade. (And y'all know how much I like my bourbon.)

Above all, remember this: eat, drink, and be aMERIcan.

WEEKEND LINKS

So much to read, so little time! Here are some goodies that caught my eye on the web this week.

01. SHORT STACK: a kickstarter project to create handmade cookbooklets - small-format cookbooks that focus on a single, inspiring ingredient, with recipes culled by an awesome tastemasters and food writers.

02. HIGHBROW SUMMER READS: a list complied by flavorwire of some good summer reads, both in quality and plot. can't wait to add some to my summer reading list!

03. LOEFFLER RANDALL'S PRE-FALL ACCESSORIES: beautifully crafted shoes and bags for all the cool cats out there. my favs are the lock clutch and the damaris platform sandal.

04. ONLINE TOOLS FOR AN ORGANIZED LIFE: laicie of one thousand threads' tips for online sites and apps to help keep your life O.T.O.T. (on time, on target). i'll be downloading some of these for sure!

05. WHAT, WHY, AND HOW TO STYLE HAIR: into the gloss kills it with this feature that demystfies the hair product aisle in sephora.  what's the difference between wax and pomade? which should you use? when should you use it? all that and some quirky illustrations to boot - a must bookmark.

BLOG LOVE: MY MORNING ROUTINE

Breakfast is my favorite meal of the day.
Actually, to be technical, brunch is - it's got all the yumminess of breakfast foods but at a more reasonable hour. (Plus, mimosas are usually involved).  But even on those days of early class or work, I always eat breakfast. As much as I love sleep, I'd rather get up 20 minutes earlier to have time to sit and enjoy breakfast and take a moment to myself - drink some tea or OJ, eat some eggs or cereal, check my email, the news, etc.  It's my little routine, and without it I always feel like I'm starting the day off rushed and flustered.

So it's part celebrity voyeurism, part breakfast inspiration, part thank-god-other-people-like-their-morning-routines-as-much-as-i-do that make me enjoy Bon Appetite's MY MORNING ROUTINE feature so much.  They talk to famous people - everyone from models to singers to athletes - about their morning routines, and specifically their breakfasts.  So even if you don't have a AM ritual, you can read all about what others do - and maybe get inspired for a little morning routine of your own!

SUPER SUNDAY

01 / 02 / 03 / 04 / 05

Today, I am homesick. While I love being in Barcelona, today, there is no where I'd rather be than on a couch at home or at school, with a cold beer in one hand and a chip loaded with guacamole in the other.  It's Superbowl Sunday, and unlike those who just like beer and 7-layer dip, I really enjoy football and always love watching the championship game.

Anyway, being 6 hours ahead of the East Coast means that kickoff in BCN will be at approximately 12:30 tonight. Stellar. So instead of sitting on a couch and munching on treats and yelling at the TV, I will be in a bar filled with American students, elbowing my way to get a view of the TV and paying 5 euros for a beer I don't really want.  But I will do it because I love football and the Superbowl and America, and even being in Spain isn't going to stop me from watching.
(Though probably just the first half.  12:30 on a Sunday is L-A-T-E people!!)

But lucky you - y'all still have the chance to whip up some snacks and get your spot on the couch all worn in before the game begins this evening.  If you're looking for some good suggestions, here's what I wish I was snacking on today.
Enjoy watching the Superbowl at a reasonable hour, and have a beer and some onion dip for me!

TAKE A HAPPY PILL

One of my most recent - and favorite - discoveries while wandering the streets of Barcelona is happy pills.  It's a Spanish candy shop that totally commits to the theme of candy being "happy pills" that cure all.  As you can see from the picture above, the storefront is what drew us in originally - so cool!  The whole place is white and sleek and clinical, just like what you would expect from a medically-themed store.  What you do next is easy enough.

The pill bottles and cases cost a few extra euros, depending on the size, so we just got plastic baggies that we filled to the brim with gummy candy of every color.  You seal the bag with a cool happy pills sticker, which tells you what the pills were supposed to cure - everything from lovesickness to a Sunday without football.  A cute concept, a well-designed store, and delicious candy - what more could a girl ask for?

CHOOSE YOUR OWN ADVENTURE: THANKSGIVING

So here's the deal: you're home for Thanksgiving at your parents' house.  Maybe it's just your close immediate family, maybe you've got your third cousin once removed there.  Point is, it's Thanksgiving dinner with the family, and you've somehow been volun-told to make a dessert.  This is where your life turns into a choose-your-own-adventure paperbacks I used to check out of my middle school library, where picking the wrong thing could lead to DEATH.
(Or, you know, just being ridiculed and possibly cut out of the will).

**DISCLAIMER: This is an exaggeration.  The author passes no judgement if you make a pumpkin pie, at any point on the homemade to store-bought continuum.  Pumpkin pie is delicious.  She is merely pointing out that this might be a good chance to actually make one of those recipes you always pin to Pinterest.  Also, no matter which option you pick, there is no guarantee of tears of either joy or sorrow.

OPTION 1: Rustic Apple Pie Tart.
I guess it's technically a tart, but it also has the word pie in it, so it counts.
Also, bonus points if you make it in a cute mini cast iron skiller.  (via.)

OPTION 2: Bourbon Pecan Pie.
One word: bourbon. Also, it was featured in Garden & Gun, so it's gotta be pretty good. (via.)

OPTION 3: Spiced Bourbon Apple Pie.
I repeat - bourbon.  Also a good one for people who don't like pumpkin. (via.)

OPTION 4: Shoefly Pie.
According to the website, a traditional Pennsylvania Dutch dessert.  Main flavor: molasses. (via.)

OPTION 5: Sweet Potato Pecan & Bourbon Pie.
Again with the bourbon.  And the pecans. Twist! This one's got sweet potato in to as well. (via.)

OPTION 6: Crack Pie.
A recipe from Milk Bar by way of Bon Appetit; so called because of its addictive qualities.
Warning: may require an intervention. (via)

Make the right choice & may the odds be ever in your favor, my friends!

SPRING PICNIC

Yesterday's post about the travel-friendly STACKED wines and today's beautiful weather have me craving a picnic!  If I could do it, I would go all out - a springtime picnic cocktail, a fabulous cheese board, and a post-lunch game of croquet in the sunshine!  And this, of course, is the casual all-American outfit I would wear!
